Does anyone on this list server know anything about the new bike route
being built along the south side of Westminster highway east of No. 6
Rd?
Thanks for your interest in the new bike route, Andrew. I am familiar
with the bike route, as are the other members of the Richmond Community
Cycling Committee. I would have replied to your concerns sooner, but I
wanted to check with the City of Richmond for the latest details before
responding.

-How far east is it going to go?
Funding from the CNP will take the route to No. 7 Road. Extending the
route to No. 8 Road depends on similar (future) funding from the CNP.

-does it meet modern standards for a two-way bike route in terms of width?
Yes indeed. The pathway is 3.0-m wide, which is the TAC (Transpo
Assoc of Canada) & AASHTO (US Assoc) standard for a two-way
shared use path.

-is there a bicycle users group in Richmond which has reviewed the plans
for this project?
Most definitely. The RCCC performed a site visit on November 12, 2001
to review the connection of the new path to the segment of the
Westminster Highway route which will take it to Garden City Road.

As well, we have spent a considerable amount of time planning new
road markings and improvements to the section between the new path
and the existing bike lanes along Garden City Road.

(I'd swear there's a fire hydrant in the middle of the path at one
point...)
Even in response to residents who enjoy accompanying their canine
companions on their walks, I doubt that the Cycling Committee would
endorse such a configuration. To be sure, I consulted the city and
received this from the City Engineer who is the Project Manager:

Thanks for your feedback, Larry.

I think the Westminster Hwy route is a very important development for
cyclists as there
is currently no safe and effecient east-west route in eastern Richmond. The
connection to
No. 8Rd cannot be coming soon enough! Is there a vision beyond that? (I
think at least the shoulder
is reasonable east of No8Rd).

Certainly my observing the work being done on the route (mostly from the bus
or car) it looks
like the foundation for this route will be very solid! I am happy to hear
that the surface will
also be prepared to modern engineering standards.

I am not aware of the activities of the RCCC but I know from experience in
New West that
its important that cyclists periodically look over the shoulders of those
doing the work on
cycling infrastructure. (Sometimes I'd swear that some of the engineers had
never ridden
a bike...) Glad to hear that the RCCC took the time to do it.

Andrew.
